Who is the greatest artist since 1970?

Any medium-- words, music, paint, lawn ornaments... But works before 1970 can't be factored.

My initial answer is David Bowie...... or Mr. Quintron.

since the 70's? the answer is in two parts.
1. the rolling stones. (in the 70's) in the 80's and the 90's they have lost their soul (see:harlem shuffle and prices they charge for tickets).
2. rick rubin (producer). see - (nin, beastie boys, ministry, tom petty, but most importantly - johnny cash) put him at the mixing board, in some old gutted out church in the south - with the rolling stones plugged in.

but other than that fantasy...it would have to be -david lynch/david bowie.
someone has posted GBV - which although a great band are hardly time tested. and martin S. - lets not forget the age of innocence, kundun...(but the overlooked king of comedy is a underrated masterpiece - scathing attack on media and pop culture).
david lynch - eraserhead, elephant man, blue velvet, twin peaks, wild at heart, lost highway, a straight story and mulhulland drive. (let's just forget all about Dune. - nobody is perfect.)

here's another question...any artist from the 90's that will be around in 30 years?

The Stones do have one of my favorite lyrics of the 80's, from "Start Me Up":

You make a grown man cry
You make a dead man come

Vladimir Gurstenminer- Choreographer of the most amazing Soviet synchronized swimming routines since the world tragically lost Olga Doudlj to a horrific bathtub drowning.

I like Vlad's early work, when he wasn't afraid to incorporate costumed dolphins into the show. Now he plays it too safe, in my view.

how can anyone rate art especially in this post trash can school of art era. Since a group of art critics took it upon their own shoulders to run an experiment that any ad exec already knew these critics decided to see if they could make "good art" by declaring bad art as sublime and great and revolutionary it was a joke to them but it worked and it got away from them and now we have performance artists pouring hot chocolate over their nude form while letting a dog like it off and reading male bashing poetry until the dog dies and are being declared paragons of the art world and getting paid by the NEA for doing this. its crap complete crap. NOW THIS IS IMPORTANT I am not saying to close down the NEA nor am I advocating not funding art at the national level but lets get serious and fund real art reign in the critics and the "cutting edge" and deliever good art and yes you can define good art lets even go so far as to fund lasting art like buildings arnt you sick of square boring white govt buildings lets get Pei and others to design great buildings of lasting importance for our government buildings instead of paying the lowest bidder to build another box. Lets have good art adorn the walls of or government buildings let us influence ourselves through real culture experiences lets face it much of the "great" art of the world was bought and paid for by the governments of the world so why are we paying for crap
