Normally I feel invulnerable to hurricanes because I'm equipped with unsurpassed
survival gear. However, this time prudence dictates that
Lovely, Pearlgirl and I head outta state. People who don't normally freak out and leave are, well,
freaking out and leaving. Like Richard says, it feels "different" this time.
I'll also just note that unlike her predecessor, Gov. Blanco decided to take a *gasp*
expensive helicopter trip to New Orleans to stand with local officials making a statement on TV. I, for one, appreciated that.
Louisiana is in a state of emergency, and New Orleans has a voluntary evacuation going. Interstates around the city have been configured for "contraflow", so traffic can only go outbound.
It's sobering to think that Monday could be the end of something precious here. Below are a couple of "pre-hurricane" pictures looking down my street, during tonight's sunset:

and tax that dog behind the tree!---
"The worst-case scenario for New Orleans -- a direct strike by a full-strength [hurricane]-- could submerge much of this historic city treetop-deep in a stew of sewage, industrial chemicals and fire ants, and the inundation could last for weeks, experts say."---
Greg understands.

Stay safe Oyster--if things look bad, move to higher ground--and, while my apartment is humble (and a mess) you and your family are welcome, of course.
I'm assuming though, that you can find better accomodations.
However, if you can't let me know.
You be careful now. I need someone to argue with.
See ya when you get back
stay safe... but surely with all the Christians praying god won't hurt America...
Woah, Oyster, be careful.
Hope all is safe for you and yours ...
Thanks for making light of the situation. Kind of hard to know what else to say. I keep picking my chin up off the floor at the size and intensity of the thing.
Good luck!
You get your family to safety, oyster. And when you can, drop us a post to let us know y'all are safe. Please God the evacuation will have been a precaution it wasn't necessary to take, and then y'all can have the mother of all block parties to celebrate afterward. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers tonight and tomorrow.
It looks bad for your fair city, oyster. I assume you and your family have gotten out of town by now. I'll be thinking of you. Let's hope it's all a big mistake, and that Katrina lands far enough east to save New Orleans. If not, if this is The Big One, please do whatever you must to stay safe. I can't move hurricanes with my prayers, but you and yours will be in them anyway.
Please stay safe, oyster and family.
Best of luck to you, and take care...
Stay safe and may the greater Force be with you and your loved ones insteada that bitch Katrina.

Stay safe, Oyster. Some people wonder why someone would live in a city below sea level in hurricane alley, but I've been there. I know why.
Have courage, Oyster. I'm on the west coast of Florida and last year I spent more time than I would have liked getting familiar with my chain saws. Best of luck to you guys...I feel so helpless just watching this develope.
Hope you're someplace safe. I'm in Katy, Texas. This severely sucks. Not that we didn't see it coming.
Take care o' yaself, bra. I'm really glad it's not as bad as it was looking yesterday, but we still got problems. Right now I'm digging around trying to find out where the localized flooding is, wondering whether my parents will have a house to come back to, or if it's one of those I've been hearing about where the water's up to the roofline.
Thought I'd drop in via the Monk. Take care of your loved ones. Godspeed and good luck.
Be safe, and take care to all your family. See you in drier times...

Good luck, oyster. I feel kinda guilty for not having Lafayette take some of the edge off. Thinking of all of you.
Good luck, Oyster. I hope that all is going well.
Gives us a word how you made out oyster. I'm sure you're laying low somewhere. Maybe, like me, you haven't had power.
I'm trying to figure out how to get back to the city. If you hear of something, let us know.
I'll do the same.
no word from you for a while, let me know if I can do anything to help oyster. jkas.
hope you are well oyster. drop me a line when you can.
hey oyster,
I hope you're okay. I'm in Houston. Boo erns...
This is the wiseman from Camp Street. We are in Knoxville. Where ya'at? I cannot reach you via phones. email me please franklinnc@hotmail.com so we know you're okay.
Oyster, Lovely & Pearl Girl,
This is Ro to the Bizzle from Tucker in Jefferson. I hope you all are safe, well, and not tearing your hair out as I am at the horrendous circumstances that have befallen our city. Please keep in touch at Skittle411@cox.net. I'm in Indiana with Nat & family.
I really hope you and the Pearlgirl are okay. This is a tragedy. Even here in Europe we are shocked and saddened and you, and the people of New Orleans, are in our thoughts.
Hello everyone.
We're alright-- in Florida, after initially evacuating to Mississippi (don't ask). Sorry to keep everyone in limbo; this is the first computer access I've had since leaving the house.
Thanks to everybody for all the kind thoughts.
Good to hear your "voice," as it were. Let us know if there's ANYTHING we can do.
I second the "other" Michael's motion.
I'm glad to hear you and yours made it out OK, Oyster.
