Moved by politics over humanitarian appeals, LBJ visited New Orleans less than 24 hours after the city was flooded by hurricane Betsy in 1965.


Oh, that reminds me: all the tourists who've visited and enjoyed the Crescent City since Betsy, but who now complain about rebuilding it (while the U.S. rebuilds Iraq) can go suck an unpickled egg!! Shouldn't you have been boycotting the city the past forty years, or don't you know history? We rebuilt New Orleans for your pleasure then, and we'll rebuild it for your pleasure this time, too. And I'll be damned if you don't eventually visit us again, and frolic, and then go back home, spent, but ready to "tut tut" us with a more-secure- than-thou sense of superiority.

Listen, Buckwheat: just because your bland, unhistorical, suburban, cultureles, Panera Bread mini-mall wastelands could be replicated anywhere else, doesn't mean that we share your aesthetic about our city. In fact, don't you visit New Orleans precisely because it's so different here?-- even, at times, to the point of absurdity!

I worked with a Katrina evacuee yesterday. She was doing duty at a shelter for Rita victims. Someone asked her if she was going back to New Orleans and she got downright indignant. "Damn right! I'm going back to help build my city and everyone who says different can kiss my black ass."

I asked her what she wanted most, and she wanted a pan of pork chops and rice, cooked in her own kitchen. I hope she makes it home soon.

Fantastic as usual, oyster. I read a great quote about the city, in The Weekly Standard, of all places: New Orleans is one of the only places left that actually feels like a place.

I get it. I always thought New Orleans was a place for white collar workers to vomit and look at tits without getting harrassed for doing so.

Of course there's a lot of talk about the evacuees, but what about these people you speak of: where are they to go if there's no New Orleans? Where will they drink? Where will they puke? Where will they have their adulterous one-night-stands? Where will they piss in the street and not get busted? Cabo? Ibiza? Forget it. We have to think about these people too when we rebuild.

I hope they leave the gentrification out of it. But knowing them, they will. New Orleans is, indeed, one of the last "places" we have left. It is its own aesthetic.
