The Times Picayune
story titled "Epidemic crime killing recovery, senator says" begins like this:
The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday brought national attention to New Orleans' tops-in-the-nation murder rate with the panel's chairman calling violent crime the "most serious threat" to the city's post-hurricane recovery.
Meanwhile:[New Orleans Police Deputy Chief John Bryson] proclaimed that New Orleans "has been one of the safest cities in the world."
He acknowledged it may not appear so, but said it will "once again" be the safest once the "drug situation" and "economic situation" come under control. NOPD Superintendent Warren Riley is in Norway this week at a conference.
Those stupid Senators!! Can't they see New Orleans is actually on the verge of
extreme safety? We just need to get the "drug situation" and the "economic situation" under control, that's all. Once we do that, we'll be laughing like lovers, and safe as shotgun houses, and the like.
---
For some reason, when I read Chief Riley was in Norway I had a flashback to a very unfortunate conversation I had with my father in law some years ago. I forget why, but shortly after getting married I told him that there was a Norwegian Seaman's Church on Prytania near our apartment. All well and good. But for some reason, I felt the need to be perfectly clear:
"'Seamen' as in, you know, sailors... heh" then I grimaced in embarrassment and shut up.
(As if he thought I meant Norwegian Semen's Church, where they pray to Thor's immaculate ejaculate or something.)Labels: crime, Riley

I remember that church, from when I lived on St. Andrew, in my "basement" apartment that was only $200 a month.
Damn, that was a long time ago.
So, who's hyping/lying more, the congresscritters or the P.R. arm of the most corrupt police department this side of the West Feliciana Sheriff's Department?
BTW, I never once saw anyone going into or coming out of that church --- kinda creepy.
Sad to say that the congresscritters are not doing too much hyping, and the NOPD is smoking some of the items in the evidence room if it believes that "safest city" bullshit.
The NOPD needs new leadership, but last year we re-elected perhaps the only person in the city who is 100% committed to keeping Riley in office. (The current DA needs to be recalled immediately, too).
Well, technically, he's right. Except for the violence caused by the drug trade and the violence caused by economic disparities, we're in a pretty safe place.
And if we had some ham, we could have ham and eggs, if we had some eggs.
I feel safe ... in my house with the gate and doors locked at all times. A friend moved back here and then just left again because she felt too unsafe living in the Quarter.
If we had some spam and some eggs, we could have spam and eggs.
If we had a new Mayor and D.A., my ham and eggs would taste better.
Hee! A kid in my junior high math class got thrown out of class for trying to tell a clean joke that sounded dirty: "What's big and long and full of seamen?" Read it aloud and you'll get my meaning.
As for the Seamen's Church, it's right around the corner from us, and lately, there have been some street parades going down the next street over that originate at the church. Apparently, the church has also put out an album made by its band...some NOLA-wegian jazz, I guess.
Must go well with spam, spam, eggs and spam...looooovely spam, wonderful spam...
He's right, crime related to drugs and economics don't count in this new era. I've heard very little terrorism related activites in the city. The war in Iraq has made New Orleans safer.
My, my. What witty commenters you have, Oyster. New Orleans actually is safe for me. But hey! I live 65 miles away.
Would I sound terribly ignorant if I ask if anyone's done a demographic breakdown on who, exactly, is committing most of the violent crimes?
Granted, I ain't been home since Halloween '05, but all that I hear outta NOLA and da West Bank is that the Halliburton, Shaw Group, Boh Bros. and other construction-firm-sponsored "Guest Workers" are bringing more brutality than the home-grown criminals ever dreamed of creating.
Is that just a rumor, or is it da troof? Where is the bloodshed coming from --- locals, or the newly-imported legal-slave-trade goods?
Easily I to but I contemplate the list inform should have more info then it has.
