Part of Bush's world

Greg points us to David Kurtz's TPM post which shows President Bush once again repeatedly referring to New Orleans as a "part of the world".

"[T]he taxpayers and people from all around the country have got to understand the people of this part of the world really do appreciate the fact that the American citizens are supportive of the recovery effort."

"I come telling the folks in this part of the world that we still understand there's problems and we're still engaged."

"We care deeply about the folks in this part of the world."

Re-read those patronizing quotes. They're damnable!

Now, look at the evidence I've compiled here, here and here about Bush's usage of "part of the world". Bush has many very strange speech predilections, but this is one is very revealing to me. It's a subtle, nasty hurtful attack, and if you think Bush is blissfully unaware of phrases that he constantly repeats in particular situations about particular topics... well, you just haven't been paying attention during the past 6 years. If he thinks we like that "part of the world" phrasing, someone should tell him we don't. And if he already knows we don't like it (which seems likely), then... I'd like to show him a part of my American ass he can kiss.

One world is enough for all of us...

It's an annoying Bushism, but he doesn't limit it to our part of the world.

He also used the "this part of the world" phrase while in Mississippi yesterday.

Good link, David. I guess it's just his nature. However, that list is woefully incomplete in terms of how many times Bush has said that in reference to the Gulf Coast.

I want to be careful how I say this, but I really think there's preaching to the choir and giving the choir the talking points to help convert the undecided (poorly worded, I know). Ideally, you can do both at the same time, but I'm afraid that this is a sermon that turns off the unconverted.

At various times, I've asked three different non-bloggers, all from New Orleans, what they thought of "this part of the world," all three scoffed or rolled their eyes. One's an unconvertible conservative -- voted for Bush both times, thinks we'll just waste more aid, etc. The other two voted for Bush in 2000, but Kerry in 2004 -- worry about who'd administer more aid, but think we've been cheated. One lives in Mandeville, the other moved to Houston after Katrina. In other words, they're the kind of people that I would think most people who try to speak for the city want to keep on board, especially since they probably talk to more people with mixed feelings than most New Orleans bloggers do. Both gave a "get real" reaction and one said he probably says that wherever he goes. That caused us to wonder if anybody had even googled 'Bush "this part of the world"'. The link I gave on the earlier comment used to be the second that came up, now it's a little further down the first page.

Anyway, I don't want to pick a blogger fight, but I think this is the kind of thing that plays well with people who already hate Bush, but is, at best, pointless to everybody else. It could be counterproductive, try it on somebody who isn't already a Bush hater. Actually, of the two people who voted for Kerry after voting for Bush the first time, one is a full-fledged Bush-hater and the other merely refers to him with scorn and contempt that I think stops short of hatred.
