"Indulge me."
As geeks like me prepare for the December release of
Blade Runner: The Final Cut (part 1), Michael at
2 Millionth Web Log connects the controversial Blackwater security firm to a character in the sci-fi masterpiece, and leaves readers wondering "Has Blackwater been infiltrated by 'skin jobs'?".
Previous YRHT posts on the movie
here, additional reference
here and probably several other places I've forgotten about.
Luckily, my experience with Blackwater here in New Orleans was limited to
this incident.
White Zombie's biggest hit was based on Blade Runner. I recall being at
the Dungeon one
night morning, and I was standing next to an Australian animator (who suddenly and inexplicably thought I'd become his friend indeed). He wanted me to ask the bartender where he/we could get some blow. I courteously declined. White Zombie's "More Human than Human" was pumping and blaring, and the Aussie decided to take matters into his own hands and ask the bartender himself. She couldn't understand what he was saying, until finally he yelled and pantomimed some tooting and she furiously shook her head. I was afraid she was gonna 86 the both of us (Lovely and me and friends got 86ed from the Dungeon on our Wedding night, but that's another story)-- so I asked her if she knew what movie the White Zombie song was based on. She didn't, but I made fun of myself and the situation was defused.
I stayed and drank some more, and my new Aussie friend eventually left in search of coke.

Update: Barry Ritholtz has much more about the Blade Runner re-re-release Final Cut (part 1).

I tossed off a quick reply to your comment, but now that I think about it...
"the flame that burns twice as bright lasts but half as long..."
Guess that explains the two full terms for Team Bush...
Heh. There's actually ANOTHER cut of "Blade Runner" being released? Is that REALLY necessary? Don't answer that, 'cause I know it's gonna be "yes"...
...I AM a geek, too, after all.
I certainly hope that wasn't Consuela you guys were harassing that night. It may be one of the reasons she hasn't returned from Memphis post-K.
Bladerunner is, like, my favorite movie EVAR. I watched a documentary about Philip K. Dick a couple of weeks ago. Michael and I must have a cosmic coincidenza, because I have been wondering if there might be skin jobs at the highest levels of power. If they are really good skin jobs, even THEY don't know they are replicants. George W. Bush seems more like a bad simulation of a human being than a real human being, but would scientists who were smart enough to make such a creature make such an inept, obvious skin job? I get the paranoid schizophrenics just thinking about it.
ungulu, I don't like movies
i prefer sgufala and feeka!
Ah yes, our infamous early exit from The Dungeon. I wear that story as a badge of honor as we're still the only people I know to be forcibly removed from the Dungeon. Maybe I need to expand my social circle :)
Still one of, if not my favorite, nights of my life. Ever. Man we had a blast that night.
And all those moments will be lost, in time, like tears in rain.
Oyster: you might enjoy this, it combines idiocy and Blade Runner

Dude, I'm counting the days till this release. I think it's going to play theatrically in L.A. next month. Also, they're releasing a 5-disc set that includes the Final Cut, Director's Cut, Original Theaterical Version with the voice-over and happy ending, and a working cut that's supposedly VERY different. It'll take a week just to get through everything. Must stop talking ... developing chubby.
George W. Bush might be a skinjob, but he's no Nexus Six...more like Nexus Shit.
My online bookclub is reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? for October. It is interesting to see how that novel inspired some of Blade Runner, but also how the movie treats the topics so very differently. Fascinating stuff.
I am going to enjoy seeing this movie again in the theater. I saw the original version when it first came out in theaters.
Why does blogger screw up links?
It was supposed to be www.darkandstormybookclub.com - but blogger put some extra leader in there. Sorry.
