Deportation

"Anybody who committed a crime in this country or in the country they came from has to be deported immediately, with no legal process. They are immediately gone"-- Mrs. Clinton told a town hall meeting on Thursday.

"I come from a border state. I know how to fix those borders with walls, with UAVs, with sensors, with cameras, with vehicle barriers.... And I will do that... And then we will have a temporary worker program with tamper-proof biometric documents, and any employer who employs someone in any other circumstances will be prosecuted... Then, of course, we have to get rid of two million people who have committed crimes here. We have to round them up and deport them." --Senator John McCain, Sunday on Meet The Press.

"Of course" we have to round up and deport millions of people? Really? Is that the sudden consensus position amongst the GOP and Democratic front-runners? Precisely how would such a "program" be accomplished? Seriously, what would mass deportation look like? What would be required? Would such a massive "round up" be the best use of our law enforcement resources?

Late Update: As BayouStJohnDavid points out in the comments, Hillary's comments should be narrowly construed as applying to a few specific cases. She doesn't seem to be advocating for the widespread "round 'em up" policy that McCain is advocating. YRHT apologizes for the exaggeration.

The question that begs in my mind is what will be done to fill the gaps in the workforce... a sudden 5% drop in the total US labor workforce (with markedly higher percentages in industry and agriculture) is enough to crumble the economy. One would think that with all the talk of saving off a recession that someone would make the labor--immigration-- economy connection.

This is why I hope Hillary is not the Democratic nominee. Not even that I expect a "mass deportation" of any kind; you're right, Oyster, it's a logistical conundrum. But it does show the Hillary can toss red meat as well as any Republican. Ridiculous.

2 million is only about 2% of the US workforce and the current unemployment rate is 5%.

Teleporting 2 million criminals would reduce the US unemployment rate to approximately 3%.

"The bill's language permitted legalization for some who committed crimes relating to illegal entry into America and forging Social Security cards"

Clinton is my last choice of the three remaining Dems, but she didn't call for the deportation of millions. She tried to have it both ways, or say something ambiguous, or play to win or something, but you're exaggerating.

Not sure it's quite as simple as that, mominem. But I will note that during a time of massive illegal immigration into the U.S., the (official) unemployment rate has been quite low by historical standards.

BSJD: Yeah, after reading the article a little more carefully, I see that you're right.

They're so up and ready to do all this but a national health insurance program would be too bulky?

Progressives need a better boogeyman slogan for these ridiculous suggestions.

Should we call it "socialized authoritarianism?"

Wait and minute -- we *shouldn't* have a plan for deporting illegal aliens who are criminals?

I think you understand why there's a consensus on this issue. Even if the goal isn't ultimately accomplished, it's something Bubba-Six-Pack wants John-F-Politico to be talking about. Illegal immigration may not be offensive to everyone, but when Mexican criminals start jumping the border, people take notice.

And the truth is that we could be doing a better job of it. Even when local officials try to hand over illegals wanted for crimes to the feds, they generally balk at actually taking custody (this was part of Giuliani's stump speech). It's definitely a problem.

owen - As I point out elsewhere, deporting illegal immigrants accused of criminal behavior without subjecting them to the normal prosecution under our system of criminal justice sends the wrong message. By telling such individuals that the only "penalty" for committing a crime in the U.S. is a one-way ticket back home and to freedome, and not the prospect of signficant jail time, actually encourages the criminal element of the potential migration pool to actually make the decision to migrate. If I am predisposed to being an armed robber and I know that, by migrating, I will simply just be deported once (and if) I am caught, well then, hell, I'm gonna migrate.

No, our plan for illegal immigrants who are charged with criminal behavior in the U.S. shouldn't be deportation, but rather one that subjects them to the full range of the U.S. judicial system in prosecuting their crimes and holding them accountable and maybe even putting them in prison. That would be a much more effective deterrent to illegal immigration and criminal behavior, don't you think?
