The fight of his political life
John Edwards’ Center for Promise and Opportunity Foundation
(supposedly a model anti-poverty initiative) "appears to be largely defunct"
. This is more disheartening than the cheating.
No other candidate associated with New Orleans more closely than Edwards. He began and ended his campaign here, and called eliminating poverty the fight of his life. A lot of my progressive blogger friends
supported him for the Democratic primary, and some even voted for him despite the fact he'd already suspended his campaign. Yet, Edwards received fewer votes than Joe Biden in Orleans parish.
That vote total still amazes and puzzles me. I realize Biden has connections
to the area, and was listed first on the ballot... etc.. But still, I can't understand it.
Update: slight edit has been made for clarity and accuracy

C'mon, oyster...You know good and danged well that the fight of his life was getting enough legal tender cobbled together to make his little porkpie want to "maintain her privacy"...
True, go. I wasn't actually as surprised or "disheartened" by this as the post would indicate.
Yeah...A few of us saw knew that trial lawyer look from a mile away...
I wonder if he can now imitate his wife's reaction on TV like he imitated all those poor little babies in the courtroom!
I know more than a few OBGYN's that are dancing a little jig at his fall from grace...He made it sincerely harder for them to "share their love"...and he cost a lot of woman quality prenatal care by driving folks completely out of the profession with his idiocy...
Oyster, I feel sorry for those who put such faith in the weasel, but I never understood it.
It was fascinating how he went from a Southern-fried Lieberman to a populist the minute he decided to run for the presidency.
He deeply regretted his vote (and his freakin' co-sponsorship!) of the Patriot Act...as soon as it became unpopular.
He deeply regretted his vote for the Iraq War...as soon as it became unpopular.
Gay marriage? Well, his new base was for it, but it was still unpopular with the public at large...so Johnny Boy let everyone know that he was "struggling." I'm sure as soon as the majority of the public was in favor of it, his moral struggle would've been over.
He used the L9W as a backdrop as surely as Bush used Jackson Square, came back a couple of times, and then forgot about it as soon as he was out of the race. And now he's dismantling the anti-poverty initiative that was supposed to be the cornerstone of everything in which he believed.
He's really the greasiest, most transparently phony thing since Jerry Falwell. I honestly couldn't figure his appeal then, and understand it less now.
Had a Republican talk show host done something 1/100th as hurtful and harmful to Elizabeth Edwards as John Edwards did, the Kos-style blogosphere would be out for blood. They worshiped her, or claimed to.
Don't get it. Never will.
cuz edwards is a phony. he was a phony from jumpstreet. he played a populist on tv, but all along he was just a slick ken doll politician.
it was very frustrating to see so many of my honorable fellow lefty new orleanians fall for this guy, the mitt romney of the democratic party.
