The Bad Shepherd
T-PA federal grand jury is expected to indict State Sen. Derrick Shepherd this morning after months investigating allegations that the Marrero Democrat laundered $141,000 for an unlicensed bond broker.
U.S. Attorney Jim Letten's office has called a 2 p.m. news conference at his Poydras Street office "regarding a significant development in an ongoing corruption matter."

Walker Hines: "progressive Democrat"?
While running to become State Rep for district 95,
Walker Hines wrote an email to Ray,
saying:You will be pleasantly surprised by my passion, personality, background, and voting record. Unlike my opponent who tells you whatever you want to hear, I will never sacrifice my principles for popularity. I'm a progressive Democrat who believes in the Catholic values of social justice.
But
Dangerblond informs us that Rep. Hines has made an endorsement in the U.S. Congressional race (District 1). He has thrown his support to conservative Republican Steve Scalise over
Gilda Reed, the Democratic candidate.
I would not classify that move as a "pleasant surprise".
Dangerblond boils it down
thusly: "Reed is a 60-year old college professor and mother of seven... She is in favor of universal medical care and she wants the troops out of Iraq. What more do you want?"
I would also note that Dr. Reed has
researched the effects of opiates on rats and lizards, and this knowledge would serve her well when dealing with the D.C. crowd.
===
Here's what
Ashley said about the race over a month ago:
1st district endorsement: Gilda Reed. Steve Scalise, while being far to the right, is honest and capable. However, I hate quitters. I hate people who use the will of the people who elected them, then abandon those same people for greater glory. This is what Steve Scalise just did. Gilda will be there, she's smart, she's competent, and she was at the last Rising Tide conference.

"Is there a possibility...?"
From
Kevin Allman, we learn of this funny exchange in our hallowed state Legislature:
The Louisiana Senate on Tuesday rejected a proposal to honor the New Orleans cocktail known as the Sazerac.
The bill by Sen. Ed Murray would have made the whiskey-based beverage the official state cocktail. Murray, D-New Orleans, noted that the drink was created in his home city and has become world famous. But Sen. Buddy Shaw and several other senators said it was inappropriate to honor an alcoholic beverage.
"Is there a possibility that we could be encouraging folks, who were not intending to drink, that it would be acceptable and they could become an alcoholic?" Shaw asked.
"No," Murray replied.
I'm wearing
this shirt today. I may fix myself
a Sazerac this afternoon.

"April is the cruelest month..."
The
NY Times interrupts its inexorable devolution to inform us that
"Bloggers are Mortal".
Thanks for the newsflash, Grey Lady. I'll try to remember that.

McCain is confused
McCain's confusion about who our main enemy is seems to be part of a
troubling pattern, and I
have predicted that this will have serious political ramifications in the coming months. Now that there's a history of such blunders, McCain will have less margin for error. Smaller and smaller "misstatements" will blow up bigger and bigger. Fair or not, this is how narratives develop.
"McCain is confused" feeds into one of the biggest subterranean worries voters have about Sen. Str8 Tawlk-- that he's too old for the job.
1. "By rhetorically asking if al-Qaida is a Shiite sect, McCain was once again demonstrating that
he's confused about the terrorist group's religious background."
2. "John McCain still
seems to be confusing his Shi’a and his Sunnis."
3. "I suppose that eventually the press is bound to notice that
McCain is seriously confused about the religious and political dynamics of Iraq and the greater Middle East, right?"
4.
"Did McCain get confused about al Qaeda
again?"
5.
"McCain apparently confused Sunnis and Shiites yet again."
6. "
McCain Confuses al Qaeda in Iraq with Shi’ites. Again."
7.
"McCain seems confused about al Qaeda again, suggests it’s a ’sect of Shi’ites.’"
8.
"McCain's Al Qaeda Confusion."---
Don't be McConfused, or Mac-con-fused.

And
Michael reminds us not to be "McCharming", either.

Vitty tries not to take the stand
T-P:The woman accused of being the "D.C. Madam" plans to call Sen. David Vitter, R-La., as a defense witness, her attorney said in court Monday as the high-profile racketeering and money-laundering trial got under way.
Many have puzzled over why the D.C. Madam would call Vitter as a defense witness. Did she expect him to say anything helpful to her case? Did she assume he would deny having sex with her call girls? Was she thinking that Vitty-cent would confirm allegations about him being a "diaper dandy", which would
support her claim that she provided a legal "fantasy" service that precluded intercourse? (Fat chance-- his lawyer says he'll invoke the fifth amendment.)
But as Louisiana political analyst Wayne Parent said, Vitter's chief concern isn't legal, but political.
"Every time this story is in the news, it hurts Sen. Vitter politically," Parent said. "In this situation, there is no good strategy, only less harmful ones. Whatever choice he decides to make, he'll likely see it come up in 2010 when he runs for re-election."
Quite right. And, according to
this report from the
Politico, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council might be gearing up to run against Vitter. (
Double Yuck.) However, Perkins is not the only Republican who may make a run for Vitter's seat. Republican activist Vincent Bruno has already expressed interest in opposing Vitter. In fact, back in December
Vincent Bruno proposed the most extraordinary campaign "deal" to Sen. Vitter, which the media completely ignored.

Thank you, but keep giving
Yesterday, there was a tremendous response to the
RememberAshleyMorris.com fund for Ashley Morris. With deep appreciation, I want to thank everyone who contributed. The $1000 goal I set yesterday was quickly surpassed several times over. I don't know to what extent my silly YRHT "blogatorium" persuaded anyone to give, but, as promised, I'll start blogging again. (Staying on the sidelines during
this episode was actually much more difficult than I thought.) However, that DOES NOT mean people should stop donating-- the expenses are great and we are only a fraction of the way towards defraying the funeral expenses. Please give, if you haven't. Then spread the word, birds. Ashley's family still needs a lot of help.

Please donate to RememberAshleyMorris.com

To those of you who read Ashley on a daily basis, please take a moment to
contribute some spare change to the Morris family, even a small amount. Ashley Morris entertained and informed countless readers, yet never requested a cent for his time and effort. Now's the time to show your thanks, and support his family in their time of need.
It may be immoral, but I plan to leave that hideous photo of Ashley and Meemaw up-- and not post again-- until
RememberAshleyMorris.com raises another $1000 to defray funeral expenses. So those of you who want some traditional YRHT content (and I do have some tasty stuff in the hopper), may want to contribute just so that I'll resume blogging sooner than later.

"Even in his heart the Devil has to know the water level"
T-P:Reversing earlier predictions, the Army Corps of Engineers said Saturday it may be forced to open the Bonnet Carre Spillway sometime in the next two weeks to lower the level of the Mississippi River as it passes New Orleans.
Lowering the river's level also cuts its velocity and reduces pressure on local levees.
The corps has been monitoring the river's level for several weeks and had thought opening the spillway would not be necessary.
However, recent heavy rainfall in the Arkansas, Ohio and Upper Mississippi River valleys has heightened flood worries in the metro area, corps spokesman Eric Hughes said.
