Historical memory like a Steele trap

From TPM we learn that RNC Chair Michael Steele declared that "Not in the history of mankind has the government ever created a job."

This is happy news, and I'll tell you why. Since Gov. Bobby "Reagan" Jindal declared not one but two "hiring freezes", the state government appears to have hired over 4,200 government employees at a cost of nearly a quarter billion tax dollars. If government has never created a job, then that erroneous 4,200 number can be corrected, and that $250 million can be put to other uses... like luring the next big auto plant to the gret stet.

Jindal imposing these hiring freezes seems to be, as the ethics reform package was, something more for public consumption than for actual effect. Having said that, I can also speak from personal experience that there has indeed been an impact felt from these actions on the operations level where it's sometimes difficult to fill positions where there is a need. People have to realize that this is pure BS precisely because it has nothing to do with actually evaluating where personnel needs are and are not.

Likewise at the federal level the blanket assessment that this guy makes is BS. If his party really believes in limited government then why did they not nominate Ron Paul? Why have they led the country into so many major wars? Why the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security? The USA Patriot Act? And on and on....

oh come on it is too bad we dont still teach rhetoric anymore. you know that he is talking about the 4 million jobs lost or gained that are touted by administrations about themselves or their opposition. and that the govt doenst create those jobs it is private industry that drives those jobs. this is beneath your level of intelligence to make this argument.

I don't think anything Oyster says here rivals the moronitude of "Not in the history of mankind has the government ever created a job." Regardless of what Steele is implying, that just isn't an effective way of stating it. Also, regarding the above, it seems like it would be more accurate to state private industry creates the jobs, but the government drives this via incentives and economic policy. But no matter how one says it, there is most definitely a connection between the two.

Hey, oyster, I want you to be the FIRST ONE to castigate those folks complaining to their state Senators & Republicans about their Unemployment taking so long...

If the hiring freeze weren't on, we could staff up and meet our obligations to those less fortunate.

Instead, we have to hear complaints about how long things take to get done...

Look, I'm all for reigning in wasteful government spending, but let's be honest, there are certain areas of the budget that should INCREASE in these economic times, and one of them is at my level.

Say what you want about the hiring freeze, but I deal with it-DAILY. There is a HUGE impact, and its one that costs the Republican Administration every day in the eyes of the electorate.

My perspective on this situation makes yours look quite silly...

Well, since the freeze isn't really a freeze, I think the question becomes: why aren't the 4200 plus new hirees addressing the staffing issues you referenced?

Exactly, certain things like education/training should be doubly supported in rough economic times. A blanket hiring freeze is bad precisely because it equates to a lack of a lack of priorities where priorities need to be in place.
