I really do like this guy
Huffpo:Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao, a Republican in a deeply Democratic Louisiana district, was welcomed on Tuesday night into the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
Addressing the group at a ceremony in the Capitol Visitors Center, Cao did a little bipartisan outreach.
"Don't tell the Republicans, but I might be a closet Democrat," said Cao to a round of laughter.
He then added that party shouldn't define a member of Congress and that "we are basically servants of the citizens of the United States."
Update: In the comments
Paw Paw claims that "the entire function" of U.S. Reps "is to serve the people in their district."
Not so. U.S. Reps swear to support and defend the Constitution, they do not swear to only serve the people of their district.
In the comments,
Ryan says: You left out the part where it says, "A congressman can't tell a joke?"
Actually, I thought the joke was obvious from this quote:
"'Don't tell the Republicans, but I might be a closet Democrat,' said Cao
to a round of laughter."
Let me be clear: I don't like Cao because he might be a closet Dem or might switch parties. I like him because he casts independent votes (the Stimulus Nay notwithstanding) and because-- at a time when the GOP is trying to enforce hyper-oppositional unity-- he is willing to joke about partisan uniforms.
Find me another Gooper who is willing to "joke" that he's a Dem right now.
Labels: Cao, Dems, GOP

BS about him being a closet Democrat. He like my congressman voted as they were told against the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.
Don't get sucked in like Delaware got sucked in my Mike Castle.
You left out the part where it says, "A congressman can't tell a joke?"
Oyster, I'm sure he's a great guy. But he's missing the boat on the economic issues. And you know that.
God, I wish I could type. ;-)
"Basically servants of the citizens"?
No, Congressmen are actually public servants. They are in public service. Their entire function in life is to serve the people in their district.
They should be reminded of this fact regularly by their constituents.

*taps your head*
OYYYY-STEEEER!!!
Anybody HOME in there?
Honey, snap out of it. The man is just saying anything to be personable. Closet Democrat, my tuchus.
Would the complaintants prefer Bill Jefferson instead of the squeaky clean Cao? Give me a break.
"we are basically servants of the citizens of the United States."
This is why I think they should be asked to help clean-up after speeches and appearances. I actually need some help with my yard this weekend too.
I agree, Cao isn't what has become the typical Republican: doctrinaire, shrill, and humorless (was that list redundant?).
He's far, far better than having Dollar Bill. Besides, it's only a 2 year term, so hang tight Democratic Obsessives. We should consider ourselves lucky we don't have someone like Couhig!

How about Joseph Lieberman?
Isn't Cao, like the Child Governor, one of those Zero Tolerance Christians who believe that if my lovely niece, or sister or any of my other women friends were to get raped and impregnated by a double YY Scuzozone STD Vector who happens to be their brother then she (and all other handmaidens in their Christland) will be required to carry that pregnancy to term by law?
Now that is something you don't hear many Goopers joking about, eh?
Screw that.
Aren't they just pulling our legs about all this other stuff, like representative democracy?
Is the man not imperfect, as every man? Surely there is sufficient reason for us to stone him.
Ugh.
I like him because he casts independent votes (the Stimulus Nay notwithstanding) and because-- at a time when the GOP is trying to enforce hyper-oppositional unity-- he is willing to joke about partisan uniforms.
Don't get sucked in by this whole Republican moderate thing. Castle's been playing that card for years in Delaware and it turns out that he's just Boehner's byatch.
