Please read this Cryptogon post about an Italian scientist who-- heaven forfend!-- used something called seismic monitoring to warn people about the possibility of imminent lethal disaster.

Oh, please. Quakes started in January and ha been continuing at regular intervals, and some clown with a truck and a loudspeaker starts warning of the apocalypse in March and now he's some sort of super science-magician? That the government quashed because ... why was that again? They wanted the earthquake?
How far apart would a prediction and an earthquake have to be before they move from implausible bullshit to plausible bullshit? Never mind, I just remembered Nostradamus: implausible bullshit prediction and unrelated action can be centuries apart and people will still buy into it.
Stuff like this really gets me riled. The public's understanding of science -- not to mention probability and statistics -- is so twisted and infantile that I truly believe it's slowing human development. We settle for conspiracy theories and accept easy answers and magic because it's easier than solving hard problems, and thus retard our own intellectual, moral and social evolution.
By the way, the current lead story on Cryptogon posits the "The Watchmen" contains hidden CIA MK-ULTRA triggers that prompt viewers to suicide. BUT TEH GOVERNMENT IS HIDING THE TRUTH [Gibber rant fart squeal]!!1!!1!
