Blind automelons

I was talking with someone yesterday and we imagined a watermelon vehicle wrap. It's sort of funny to think about. So I did, and that led to other thoughts.

From youtube member blindtimes' write-up of (my favorite) Blind Melon song, "Galaxie":

The song uses the main subject matter of [lead singer] Shannon Hoon's 1964 Ford Galaxie to also explore the deeper themes of his first love and break-up. He had originally bought this car used in New Orleans, for rather cheap, as the doors wouldn't even open.
...
The music video for "Galaxie" featured a cameo by Timothy Leary, and revolves around a 1965 Ford Galaxie, fitting the lyrics. The video is considered a haunting premonition of Hoon's overdose later in 1995: Hoon was on drugs while filming the video, and featured such an erratic behaviour that scared the rest of the band...

Indeed. As far as haunting premonitions in music videos go, this one perhaps surpasses Nirvana's "Come as you are". Notice how "Galaxie" is more about a wild ride (driven by unseen, Heracleitean forces) rather than a particular model of car. Also, note how the mischevious wizard's apprentice combines potions and materials to wild chaotic effect. Hoon shot a lethal speedball (H + coke) prior to a show at Tip's. The band had recorded their new album in New Orleans, and they were back in town as part of their national tour. Like Axl Rose, Hoon was a native of Lafayette, Indiana. He had a wife and young daughter, yet despite his occasional self-awareness about his problems, he wasn't able to shake his escalating addiction in time.

Seems ironic to have Timothy Leary telling his young apprentice to halt the chemical experimentation.

But I keep on a comin' here and standing in this state*
Oh and I'm always reassured the situation's gettin' carried away

Good lyric. Hard to say why, but it cuts through me like a knife tonight.

The psychedelic car ride/legions of sperm imagery was used by Queens of the Stone Age to good effect in this video.

Speaking of cars and towns named Lafayette, Greg recently had a link to a juicy story.

Also, fair warning: It's entirely possible that YRHT could become a car blog in the near future.

A great song from one of the best albums of the 1990s.

By the way, not only are Hoon and Rose both from Lafayette, Indiana, Axl Rose gave Shannon Hoon his first big break-- as a backup singer on Use Your Illusion I and II.

The band is somehow back together again-- with a new lead singer.

Here's a video of Hoon's daughter Nico singing her dad's song "Change":

I stand corrected. My brother tells me they already fired their new lead singer.
