Ed Blakely is possibly the world class douche that Mayor Nagin aspires to be.
Remember: According to Greg Meffert, Meffert was Nagin's first choice to be recovery czar. When Meff bowed out of the sweepstakes, Nagin found Blakely-- and Blakely did nothing, stayed on the job even though he was tired of doing nothing, and then blames New Orleans' lack of recovery on its citizens, who he describes as lazy racists. Not a good day for Nagin's recovery team.

Dude, I think we were just so damn glad the Setback Czar LEFT, for crying out loud. We can only monitor one douchebag at a time, and the Walking Id's excellent adventure in Cuba kinda took precedence...and the Saints' current win-loss record...and Voodpp Fest...and Halloween...and, uh, life.
I'm mixed on this one. He is not totally off his rocker here. We rub outsiders the wrong way for a reason and I'm still formulating a theory. *sigh*

I haven't listened to the interview yet, but the race riots prediction seems half phony psychic, half sportscaster (or political pundit) trying to make a name for himself. He knows about the wrongful death investigations involving the NOPD, and, while only chicken little types think that such matters always lead to riots, they certainly do end with riots occasionally. With tough economic times, racial tensions also increase. I'll believe in the national recovery when unemployment drops appreciably without inflation increasing significantly. Of course, Blakely knows what type of local situation he left. It's still not something I'd bet my money on, unless I was given very good odds. But, this is like one of those long shot predictions that TV pundits love to make because most of the country forgets them, unless one comes true -- then the guy who made the prediction can claim to be a genius. It's a no risk/high reward long shot play that's actually less of a long shot than it would ordinarily be.
We should all acknowledge the degree to which he's right about racial matters. I'm constantly hearing people say that this is a race-obsessed city. I've heard that all of my adult life from both black and white people from all over the country. Not sure if I'd heard it from other Southerners, but I've definitely heard it from from people from every other part of the country. Aside from the "foot back on black people's throats" hyperbole, the white people plotting to retake control assessment strikes me as at least two years too late. Not that I'm saying it was ever nearly that simple to begin with, but it really strikes me as absurd now.
