Assessor

Clay: "The race for the next assessor is critical for the future of New Orleans. It's a battle between old nepotistic assessors that flout the law and back the vampires of the city and a new system that will actually treat everyone fairly, regardless of political connections."

Eli: "Most consequential race flying under radar"

This is a hugely important election, and assessments are an underappreciated issue. Read Clay and Eli's posts and their links to learn why. I'll be voting for Janis Lemle, and hope you seriously consider her, and tell others about her. Millages in New Orleans have dropped due to her commitment to more accurate assessments in the sixth district. They can drop further if we opt for reform rather than the same old cronies who are responsible for the stupid and unfair "system" that has plagued New Orleans for generations.

I totally agree Oyster. Janis Lemle has my vote. Saw that crap mailer attack that Clay writes about. I think this commercial for Janis on TV does a much better job summing up what she's really about:

The mailer that Claude Mauberret mailed out under the name Citizens for Fair Assessments was vitrolic and incredibly racist.

On another topic but with connections to this topic. Andrew Gressett who is also running for reelection played the masked doctor in the Dwight McKenna commercial. Why would Gressett do this unless someone put him up to it to take votes away from Lemle.

Mauberret's family has literally controlled that seat for 100 years.

It's time for the old money vampires to get a stake through the heart.

Yeah, I really need to read some more articles on the elections.

Someone needs to make a political family tree. Aside from policy and platform stances, I think political ties are even more important to know down here.

It's also worth noting that the Andrew Gressett Frankenstein commercial features Bill Schultz (identified by the Times-Pic) as Igor. Schultz is one of Mauberret's chief campaign consultants. What're they doing playing doctor together?

Really enjoyed reading these posts about the assessor. There's been some question as to why the Gambit has refused to make an endorsement in the assessors race, despite making endorsements in many other elections. Found this quite interesting

Gambit's headquarters at 3923 Bienville St is underassessed. It was bought in March, 2004 for $650,000 and is now assessed for $555,750. It is on almost 2/3 of an acre. It has clearly been extensively renovated since Katrina. Market price is at least $1 million plus. No telling - possibly $1.5 million. Don't know about equiptment valuations on premises.

Between Clancy's home and business--- about $30-$40k each year in tax underpayment by my rough conservative estimate.

It appears someone has quite a lot to lose if Mauberret doesn't get in office. And clearly the respected Gambit couldn't actually endorse a long-time crook like Claude. So--- just stay on the sidelines and wait this one out.
